Periodic Technical Inspection of Vehicles

From January 1, 2019, the periodic technical inspection of vehicles becomes obligatory fall the road transport of every category.

The process of the technical inspection of vehicles in Georgia was launched on January 1, 2018.

The Periodic technical inspection is mandatory for all the vehicles registered in Georgia (e.i. vehicles with Georgian registration numbers).

Hotline - 1484, which serves people interested in the matters related to the periodic technical inspection of motor vehicles, is in full service of customers.

Motor vehicles will be subjected to the periodic technical inspection according to their category and date of registration (month and date). For example: if the motor vehicle is of an M1 (lightweight) category with engine capacity of 3000cm3 or more and the date of issuance of its registration certificate is 28/11/2013, the technical inspection must be carried out until November 28, 2018 (after the expiry of this period, the motor vehicle shall be subjected to the penalty by administrative procedure).

In case of re-registration of motor vehicles (which are covered by the schedule), periodic technical inspection is obligatory to be carried out within 30 calendar days from the moment of such registration.

Periodic technical inspection shall not apply to

  • Vehicles which are not registered in accordance with the legislation of Georgia;
  • O1, O2 (trailers between 750 kg and 3500 kg) and L (motorcycle) type vehicles;
  • Motor vehicles of historical value (motor vehicles manufactured before 1960, the type and model of which is excluded from production and is historically protected and maintained in its original condition while the technical characteristics of its core components have no significant change);
  • Motor vehicles removed from exploitation;
  • Vehicles, the design speed of which does not exceed 25km/hr.
  • Technical Inspection Cost
  • M1, N1, O3, O4 (light passenger cars and trailers)– 60 GEL;
  • M2 M3 N2 N3 (trucks and vans/buses) – 100 GEL.

Technical inspection periodicity

Vehicles of different categories will be subject to Periodic Technical Inspection according to the following principle:

  • Passenger motor vehicles (with more than 8 seats, except driver) will undergo technical inspection after one year from the release date and then annually. The frequency of technical inspection will be increased after four years from the release date and the vehicle will be due to undergo inspection twice a year
  • Trucks (3.5t and higher) – after a year from the release date and then annually;
  • Trailers and semi-trailers (3.5-10t and higher) – after a year from the release date and then annually;
  • Ambulances and taxis – a year from the release date and then annually
  • Lightweight passenger motor vehicles (M1 Category) – every second year starting after 4 years from the release date and once a year starting after 8 years from the release date;
  • Light trucks – 4 years after the release date and then annually


Documents to be submitted for inspection of motor vehicles

•    Vehicle registration certificate;
•    Document confirming payment of service fees.

Details to be Inspected:

  • Identification of Vehicle;
  • Braking system;
  • Steering system;
  • Visibility;
  • Lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment;
  • Axles, wheels, tyres and suspension;
  • Chassis and its constituents;
  • Environmental nuisance – (exhaust emmissions, etc)
  • Other equipment/parts.

Inspection of Gas-powered Vehicles and Vehicles with Right-side Steering Wheel

The Inspection Center shall conduct the assessment of the conformity of the airbag installed on the vehicle in accordance with the Government of Georgia Ordinance #80 on Approval of Technical Regulations on Establishment of Airbag Equipment, Its Comparative Evaluation with Technical Requirements and Safe Operation from January 15, 2014.

Vehicles with right-side steering wheel shall usually go through periodic technical inspection but those vehicles that will make first registration in Georgia after January 1, 2018, cannot pass periodic technical inspection in case of additional changes in the steering control system.

At the same time, the motor vehicles that have undergone first technical inspection from January 1, 2018 and the position of the steering wheel has been accordingly documented in the inspection report, shall not be able to pass further periodic technical inspection if the steering wheel is transferred again.

Penalty for Driving and Exploitation of Vehicle without Passing Inspection

•    Physical person - 50 GEL;
•    Legal entity - 200 GEL.
