“Georgian sugar produced by the Agara Sugar Factory will replace about 50% of imported sugar, which will significantly affect prices,” – Natia Turnava, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development said after the examination of the renovated factory and its working process and got acquainted with the future plans. Turnava was accompanied by the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili and the State Representative in Shida Kartli, Giorgi Khojevanishvili.
The Minister of Economy highlighted the importance of local production in terms of certain regions as well as for a country in a whole, especially in the current economic situation caused by the pandemic.
“This is important for the region, important for Georgia and further revival of local production. It is also noteworthy that this happens when all global pandemics are battling. Georgia has also found itself in a very difficult economic situation, but for us, the Government, this is a reason to redouble our efforts and facilitate opening of more Georgian production these days and we are working very hard in this direction,” – Natia Turnava said.
“The price on sugar is decreasing slowly and now, if we have such large-scale local production, it will allow us to have more affordable prices on the market. In addition, renovation of the Agara Sugar Factory will provide jobs for 500 locals, which is another great benefit,” – the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development added.
The Minister noted that the Georgian Government will support the production of local sugar in several areas, in particular - the factory will receive natural gas and rail services at beneficial prices.
“We and particularly the Oil and Gas Corporation helped the production by supplying natural gas at a relatively discounted price. The Georgian Railway has also promised to provide logistics services at a reduced rate. This is enough to make production and the value of the Agara Sugar Factory competitive, sustainable, and up to 500 people employed here will receive their salaries on time,” – Natia Turnava said.
As Nikoloz Natbiladze, the founder of the company stated, the Factory will be operational throughout the year, until the end of December, and plans to produce 60-65 thousand tons of sugar, which is about the half of the total market.
