Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Natia Turnava congratulated the people working in the Energy Sector on their professional day and noted that Georgian Government did its best to develop the country’s energy independence.
“I would like to congratulate you on this wonderful day, to all the people, whose hard work, knowledge and dedication have created and are still developing Georgian energy sector step by step,” – Natia Turnava said at the event dedicated to the Energy Day.
“Development of the energy sector is a priority set by our Government and I am sure everyone is aware of the reforms and projects that the Government is being implementing together with the private sector in the field. Therefore, I can ensure everybody that all people who are professionally involved in the construction of the energy sector are fulfilling a historic function, because the future of our country, our development and integration into the global economy, among other important areas, depend on the development of the energy sector,” – Natia Turnava stated.
The Minister noted that in 2017, Georgia became a member of the European Energy Union family, which put new challenges and tasks on the agenda aiming at Georgia not only into a strong energy market, but also into a European-type market operating based on the European structure and rules.
As the Minister noted, there is a lot of news in this regard - the establishment of an energy exchange, which will strengthen the elements of a civilized, transparent market in energy, as well as the whole package of framework legislation.
“We have adopted an updated Energy Law, Energy Efficiency Law and number of bylaws, and we have a very ambitious plan to develop even a legislative framework, which will ultimately increase the reliability of our electricity and gas supply to make the market more transparent, because there will be introduced the rules that are familiar to the European, Western investors,” – Natia Turnava said.
“We plan to develop another 2 000 megawatts of total power plants, including large hydropower plants, such as the recently launched Namakhvani HPP project, as well as micro-HPPs, such as the one in Shatili, to provide electricity, gas and other benefits to our population,” – Natia Turnava added.
According to the Minister, in the end, all this will bring positive outcome to the population: “Gasification and electrification infrastructure projects should be emphasized as well. Within the framework of a large-scale gasification program, 1000 settlements have been gasified so far and there, historically, there was no natural gas available before. In 2021, under the three-year program, another 400 settlements will be added to this list, and in total, we will cover 90 percent of Georgia in terms of gasification, which is an unprecedentedly high rate, especially for a country with a mountainous landscape,” – the Minister added.
