Levan Davitashvili Met with David O’Sullivan and James O’Brien

Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili held a meeting with David O’Sullivan, the EU Sanctions Envoy and James O'Brien, the Head of the Office of Sanctions Coordination in the US Administration.

During the meeting, the Vice Prime Minister emphasized the issue related to Georgia’s joining the European Union and noted that this choice of the Georgian people is as strong as ever. Davitashvili highlighted that the Government is ready to carry out the necessary reforms to move forward on this path. 

It was discussed in details with the members of the delegation how Georgia facilitates the USA, the European Union and the United Kingdom in terms of the implementation of the sanctions imposed by them.

Vice Prime Minister noted that the Government will not allow to use Georgia’s territory and financial system to avoid sanctions. According to Davitashvili, the relevant state services are actively working in this direction and all customs and financial operations are strictly controlled.

Within the framework of the meeting, the parties also discussed how Georgia helps the European Union, the USA and the United Kingdom in terms of the implementation of financial sanctions imposed on Russia after the launching of Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine.

As Vice-Prime Minister stated, Georgia will continue to help its partners to prevent the risks of avoiding new sanctions, and this will be discussed in detail with the relevant agencies.

“The assessment we received in terms of the implementation of sanctions was very positive since it was highlighted the relevant assistance by Georgia, and we received thanks for this part of the cooperation,” – Levan Davitashvili noted.

According to Davitashvili, Georgia is a very important partner of the international community today, and this was also noted by the delegation.

During the meeting, the conversation also touched on the geopolitical situation created in the region, and the relevant economic trends, challenges and opportunities.
“I think that in the future we will have close cooperation with the structures of the European Union, as well as with the representatives of the USA and United Kingdom on various issues, in order to make trade relations more effective through coordinated work and also, to avoid risks that may involve bypassing of sanctions,” – Levan Davitashvili noted.

Pawel Herczynski, Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, Kelly Degnan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Georgia, and Mark Clayton, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom to Georgia also participated in the meeting.
