Vice Prime Minister of Georgia, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili delivered a speech at the Promoting High Level Trade Connectivity session of the BRI Forum in Beijing, China.
Vice Prime Minister highlighted that the Government of Georgia pays special attention to the strengthening the country’s transit function and establishment of a trade and logistics hub in the region.
“Georgia is the only country in the region, which has the FTA with both the EU and China. Georgia-China FTA not only enhances trade and economic links between two countries, but also has broader regional benefits,” – the Minister said in his speech.
Davitashvili noted that in order to make its contribution to the Region’s transit function development and maximum use of its comparative advantage, Georgia in cooperation with partner countries actively participates in various transport corridors.
“Given the increasing need to diversify supply chains, the Middle Corridor is gaining traction as one of the viable alternatives that can offer such tangible advantages as shorter travel time compared to the maritime route and wider access to different regions and markets,” – Levan Davitashvili explained.
Vice Prime Minister underlined the recent visit of the Prime Minister of Georgia to the People’s Republic of China held in July, 2023, which has become a starting point of a new era in partnership between two countries. As a result of the visit, the Joint Statement of the People's Republic of China and Georgia on Establishing a Strategic Partnership was accepted, shaping cooperation for the years ahead.
“Georgia, as one of the states in the region pursuing most liberal trade and economic policies and simplified customs procedures, can proudly showcase itself as a catalyst towards facilitated trade and transport infrastructure providing mostly accelerated route from far Asia to Europe with reduced trade and transportation costs and time” – Levan Davitashvili noted.
