Guram Guramishvili Met with UNECE Representative

Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Guram Guramishvili, held a working meeting with the representatives of the Transport Division of the United Nations European Economic Commission (UNECE).

During the meeting, the legal and technical aspects of the program “Introduction and practical implementation of the 1958 UN Convention on the Production of Automobiles and Auto Parts in Georgia” were discussed.

Levan Gamkrelidze, the Head of the Land Transport Agency, Walter Nissler, the Chief of the Vehicle Regulations and Transport Innovations Section of the Transport Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), regional advisor Nenad Nikolic, expert Marius Damachi, the Head of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Georgia Anna Platonova and other officials also participated in the meeting.

According to the information of the Deputy Minister, the integration of the UN agreement and the local laws will give Georgia the opportunity to produce a completely new type of industrial products, which will be competitive both at local and international markets. According to him, in order to support the sector, active work is being done to further develop the infrastructure for confirming the quality of automobile transport products in Georgia, whose activities will be recognized internationally.

The parties summarized the measures implemented within the action plan developed with the support of the expert mission of the UN European Economic Commission, which includes the implementation of the 1958 UN agreement on the production of automobiles and auto parts into the national legislation.

The experts invited to the meeting gave a presentation on the role of the authority empowered to approve the type of automobiles and auto parts, the technical service (laboratory) and the manufacturer in the process of its approval and discussed the examples of different European countries.

It should be noted that in order to integrate the UN agreement in Georgian legislation, the Law of Georgia on Road Transport was amended in October 2022. Based on this law, the Government of Georgia approved Resolution №15 of January 16, 2023 on “Approving the Technical Regulations - Approval Rules for Types of Vehicle and Auto Parts”, which will come into effect on December 1, 2023.
