Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili held an introductory meeting with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Georgia, Zhou Qian.
Bilateral economic relations with special emphasis on bilateral trade, as well as cooperation in the direction of transport and logistics were discussed during the conversation.
It was noted that foreign trade between the two countries has been characterized by increasing dynamics in recent years. It was emphasized that Georgia is the only country in the region that China has signed a Free Trade Agreement with. In 5 months of 2022, trade turnover was increased by 42%, while exports – by 38%. As a result, according to the trade turnover, China, with a share of 11%, is the second largest trading partner to Georgia.
Cooperation in the field of investments was also emphasized. It was noted that the total volume of investments from China to Georgia exceeded 750 million US dollars, and the investment portfolio includes such sectors as banking, tourism, energy, real estate, metallurgy, etc.
Special attention was paid to the cooperation between the two countries in the direction of increasing transport and cargo transportation. It was noted that Georgia is actively modernizing and building its own transport-logistics infrastructure in order to be able to perform the function of the existing transport corridor between Europe and Asia more effectively.
Middle Transport Corridor passing through Georgia has great potential, which will contribute to the deepening of cooperation with Southeast Europe and the Baltic States, increase the competitiveness of the TRACECA corridor, and help attract additional cargo flows from China through Georgia, Europe and vice versa.
Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Genadi Arveladze and Head of the Trade Development and International Economic Relations Department Tarash Papaskua also attended the meeting.
