First Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili participated in the opening ceremony of the new terminal of the logistics center of the Austrian logistics company Gebrüder Weiss in Tbilisi. Levan Davitashvili addressed the audience and highlighted the importance of developing the field of transport and logistics in the country and establishing Georgia as an international transport and logistics hub.
"This is a Class A, very high international level logistics center that will serve both the local supply chain and international transit operations. At the same time this investment is fully consistent with our policy related to transport and logistics – Georgia is gradually becoming a global transport and logistics hub. It is important that the company sees its future in exactly the same way - they make additional investments in Georgia because they see the potential in our international transport routes, including whether it is the track or the perspective of the middle corridor," – the First Vice Prime Minister stated.
The Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Guram Guramishvili, Austrian Ambassador to Georgia Robert Gershner, the founder of Gebrüder Weiss Wolfram Senger-Weiss, the Regional Director Thomas Moser and the Director of Gebrüder Weiss – Georgia, Sandro Kharlamov also attended the event.
Located in Austria, Gebrüder Weiss Holding AG is a global full-service logistics company with over 500 years of history. Its logistics terminal was established in Georgia in 2012, during this period the company's activities expanded and developed, and this year it already completed the third expansion of the existing logistics center in Tbilisi. According to the company, the volume of European investments in 2024 amounted to 12 million euros, and the total investments exceeded 30 million euros. As the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development noted, the third expansion of the company in Georgia indicates that the field of transport and logistics in the country is developing in a planned manner, in accordance with the existing policy.
"One of the priority directions in the economy of Georgia is to use our transport and logistics as much as possible. Therefore, the country is actively involved in the development of transport corridors. These ideas are already slowly becoming flesh and being realized with such successful projects as Gebrüder Weiss' warehouse logistics business. In general, in the transport and logistics sectors we have made significant progress during the recent years, and we can say that these sectors play a very imperative role in the significant economic growth of the country," – the First Vice Prime Minister commented.
In addition, Levan Davitashvili emphasized that as a result of consistent policy, the country has a constant increase in cargo flow: in the January-August of 2024, the amount of cargo transported by the Georgian transport industry in the mode of international transportation amounted to 18,7 million tons, which is by 3,7% compared to the same period of 2023. Moreover, in January-August of 2024, the amount of cargo transported internationally by road transport amounted to 10,5 million tons, which is by 5,4% higher number than of the same period of 2023. According to the Minister, the government also spends hundreds of millions of GEL every year on the improvement of the relevant infrastructure in the country - modernization of public infrastructure is one of the highest expenditures in terms of the GDP.
"As you know, the East-West highway is being completed, we have already started the construction of the Anaklia Port, we have a plan for the development of the Tbilisi International Airport, and, of course, all of this contributes to the maximum utilization of the transport and logistics potential of our country" – the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development noted.
