“The Government of Georgia prioritizes the development of local generation, new renewable capacities, and transmission infrastructure. Our task is for the country to be fully self-sufficient by 2036, to increase installed capacities, to eliminate electricity imports, and to expand both export and transit capabilities. Our goal is to strengthen energy security and strive toward energy independence,” –Inga Pkhaladze, the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development stated when participating in Baku Energy Week in the capital of Azerbaijan.

Speaking at the plenary session titled “International Cooperation for a Sustainable and Diversified Energy Future,” Inga Pkhaladze noted that efforts are underway to strengthen regional energy security and reinforce Georgia’s role as a reliable transit hub. According to her, this process contributes to greater stability and economic cooperation.

As the Deputy Minister noted, ensuring energy independence and security is possible only through regional cooperation and coordinated partnership. Pkhaladze stated that ongoing projects of strategic importance clearly demonstrate the role of infrastructure in enhancing diversification and improving market accessibility.

“In this context, special attention must be paid to strategic initiatives such as the Black Sea Submarine Cable project and the Green Energy Corridor (GECO). These aim to strengthen electricity connections between the South Caucasus, the Black Sea region, and Europe, alongside supporting regional energy security, market integration, and the development of cooperation in the field of green energy,” – Inga Pkhaladze said.

According to the Deputy Minister’s assessment, the Black Sea Submarine Cable, which is a Georgian initiative, will significantly boost cross-border electricity trade, enable the export of green energy from the South Caucasus to Europe, and further solidify Georgia’s role as a reliable transit and connectivity hub.

“Strengthening partnerships, diversifying energy routes and developing reliable transit corridors have become crucial not only for national energy security, but also for broader regional and global stability. Georgia remains committed to this approach by strengthening its own energy resilience, developing renewable energy, supporting regional connectivity initiatives, and contributing to the reliable partnership that connects the South Caucasus with Europe and other regions,” – Inga Pkhaladze noted.

The energy forum, which was attended by energy ministers from various countries, serves as a leading and strategic platform for dialogue. The event, opened by the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, was held within the framework of Baku Energy Week.
