Georgia’s transport sector recorded historic performance in January-July 2026. Cargo turnover across the country’s seaports and terminals, Georgian Railway and civil aviation reached the highest levels of the past decade, further underscoring Georgia’s growing role as a regional transit and logistics hub.

In January-July 2026, a total of 11,7 million tonnes of cargo were handled at Georgian seaports and terminals, representing a 24 % increase compared to the same period of last year. During the same period, the volume of handled containers reached 484400 TEU - 8 % higher than in the corresponding period of last year. Both figures represent historic highs recorded for the January-July period over the past decade.

It is important to note that cargo growth was observed across all individual ports and terminals, as well as across all major cargo categories. Specifically, liquid and ferry cargo volumes grew by 43%, dry bulk cargo by 23%, general cargo by 16%, and containerised cargo (in tonnes) by 13%.

Record results were also achieved by Georgian Railway. In the first 7 months of 2026, Georgian Railway transported a total of 8,3 million tonnes of cargo, an 11% increase over the same period last year. Container transport reached 65935 TEU, growing by 5 %. These figures represent historic highs for the January-July period over the last decade.

In a single month, Georgian Railway transported 864 thousand tonnes of cargo in transit mode, marking the highest monthly volume recorded by the company in the past decade.

Moreover, growth was observed across all rail transport modes: transit was increased by 12%, imports – by 12 %, exports – by 6 %, and local transport – by 2 %.

Significant growth was also recorded in civil aviation. In January-July 2026, Georgia’s international airports handled 25,4 thousand tonnes of cargo, representing a 30% increase compared to the same period of last year and setting a decade-long record.

During the same period, Georgia’s international airports served 4,6 million passengers, a 0,3% increase over the same period last year, also setting the highest figure recorded for the first 7 months in the past decade.

The results of January-July 2026 highlight the strong dynamic growth of Georgia’s transport sector. Record-breaking metrics across maritime, rail, and aviation sectors reinforce Georgia’s transit and logistical capabilities and establish a solid foundation for the further expansion of the country’s transport potential and economic development.
