“Georgia and Azerbaijan are strategic partners and friendly states. We attach great importance to increasing the pace of cooperation development, including in the transport sector, which is a very important direction of economic relations between the two countries. The strategic location between the Black and Caspian Seas makes our countries important players in the ongoing development of transport corridors connecting Europe and Asia” – Mariam Kvrivishvili, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, at a meeting with the Minister of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan, Rashad Nabiyev, in Baku.
The ministers of the two countries discussed ongoing issues and further prospects related to the existing cooperation between Georgia and Azerbaijan, which are particularly important for further strengthening of the cooperation in the transport sector in bilateral and multilateral formats. As Mariam Kvrivishvili noted, it is important that railway passenger traffic begins between Georgia and Azerbaijan, which, according to the Minister, will give a new impetus to the economic relations of the two countries, including in the tourism sector.
As noted at the meeting, the indicators of cargo transportation using both road and rail are growing between the countries. The ministers placed special emphasis on the importance of the Middle Corridor, its growing role and development, in which both countries are actively involved. The discussion also touched upon TRACECA, the Black Sea-Caspian Sea route, and other regional initiatives that promote strengthening connectivity, trade relations, and economic cooperation throughout the region.
“By modernizing transport infrastructure and aligning institutional and legal frameworks with the best international practices, Georgia is successfully striving for integration into international transport markets and global supply chains, which further strengthens our country’s role in the global network of transit and logistics” – Mariam Kvrivishvili noted.
According to Kvrivishvili, several projects of regional importance are being implemented in Georgia, including the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project, which has been actively implemented through joint efforts in recent years and is in its final stage. Other significant projects include the Anaklia Deep Sea Port, the first phase of which is planned to be completed in 2028-29, and the new Tbilisi International Airport, which should significantly contribute to Georgia’s establishment as a transit and logistics hub. The meeting also highlighted the ongoing project of the Kutaisi Technological Hub, which will give Georgia the function of a regional center of attraction in terms of technological development.
The Minister of Economy also spoke with her Azerbaijani counterpart about strengthening cooperation in the field of communications, innovation, and information technologies. The ministers discussed deepening cooperation between the two countries in this direction, which includes implementing joint initiatives and displaying the region’s innovative ecosystem on the global stage.
Deputy Ministers Guram Guramishvili and Genadi Arveladze also participated in the meeting with Rashad Nabiyev in Baku, along with Mariam Kvrivishvili. The Ambassador of Georgia to the Republic of Azerbaijan, Zurab Pataradze, also attended the meeting.
