Mariam Kvrivishvili, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, participated in the conference “Review of the Georgian Economy: Macroeconomic and Sectoral Perspectives.” The conference, organized by the Georgian Business Association, opened with an address by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and was attended by representatives of the state and business sectors.
“Dialogue with business and feedback are extremely important for us, so that we can systematically and consistently make decisions that will positively affect the entrepreneurial activities of companies and the people who ultimately have a huge impact on the country’s economic development. The Ministry of Economy’s main value is making decisions based on dialogue, communication, and consultation with business. We understand well that a stable, sustainable, and at the same time predictable environment is important for business. The Ministry’s main goal is precisely to ensure such an environment, of course, beyond the important domestic political reality that creates political stability for the sustainable development of business and the economy. This is exactly the policy we will pursue: on the one hand, we have constant dialogue with the private sector, but I would like to single out three main factors we received as feedback: stability and predictability, simplification of existing bureaucratic mechanisms and acceleration of the decision-making process, as well as a strategy based on common visions across sectors” – Mariam Kvrivishvili stated.
The panel discussion “Macroeconomic Situation and Perspectives”, along with the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, was attended by Minister of Finance Lasha Khutsishvili, President of the National Bank Natia Turnava, as well as Vakhang Butskhrikidze, Deputy General Director of TBC Bank, and Archil Gachechiladze, Bank of Georgia General Director.
Mariam Kvrivishvili spoke about the dynamics of economic growth, noting that Georgia is a leader among European countries and countries in the region – last year’s average economic growth was 9,6%, and the average for the current year is 8%. “It is gratifying that despite what is happening around our country, these data are confirmed by international organizations – according to today’s assessment by the EBRD, the economic growth forecast has increased from 6% to 7%, and the International Monetary Fund has improved its forecast to 7,2%” – the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development noted.
Mariam Kvrivishvili discussed the progress of large infrastructure projects, including the Anaklia Deep Sea Port project, and the government’s and her agency’s visions and plans for the development of leading economic sectors. The Minister also focused on the investment environment, noting that the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development will be a loyal supporter of all investors in the process of their activities.
The Minister spoke about the optimization process underway in the energy sector and announced significant changes in the near future and, as a result, the country’s energy system will have a large resource to accelerate major projects. The Minister noted that the decisions will be transparent, yet strict and fair.
Mariam Kvrivishvili also introduced the achievements in the tourism and aviation sectors to the discussion participants and representatives of the private sector, emphasizing the historical result: more than 70 airlines operate with 120 direct routes from all three of the country’s international airports to various parts of the world, with European countries being among the leaders.
“Last year we saw successfully concluded negotiations with airlines British Airways, easyJet, and Edelweiss. The average load factor for all flights arriving in our country is 92 to 98 percent. We also see that the growth of tourism is diversified – this is exactly the policy the state pursues to increase Georgia’s awareness in high-spending tourist countries. This is reflected in the results we received last and this year: in 2024, we had a record income from tourism – 4,4 billion, with a significantly increased average expenditure per tourist visit” – Mariam Kvrivishvili stated.
