“Georgia is positioning itself as a renewable energy connecting bridge with Europe and utilizes renewable energy sources, digital systems, and cross-border connectivity to ensure a new era of regional development,” Riad Meddeb, Director of the Energy Center at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), said on social media. The statement was published following a meeting with Inga Pkhaladze, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, which took place within the framework of the international forum – Energy for Sustainable Development, which was held in North Macedonia.

Participants discussed regional energy projects that will connect Georgia and the South Caucasus to the European energy market. Attention was focused on the Black Sea Submarine Cable project, which will encourage electricity trade between the regions, as well as the parallel plan initiated by Azerbaijan that involves the construction of an additional 4-gigawatt capacity power transmission line. This project will turn the Black Sea into a corridor for the exchange of renewable energy resources between the European Union, Turkey, and the South Caucasus.

The parties also discussed current trends in Georgia’s energy sector, including the development of solar, wind, and hydropower projects, and the possibilities for introducing storage batteries and green hydrogen technologies.

Omar Tsereteli, Deputy Head of the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Policy and Sustainable Development Department of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, also attended the meeting.
