Mariam Kvrivishvili: During the meeting with the IMO Secretary-General, we dedicated special attention to Georgian seafarers, the issues related to the Middle Corridor and regional connectivity as well as Georgia’s key role in this regard

Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili, held a meeting with the Secretary-General of the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez. The meeting took place in London, within the framework of the International Maritime Organization Assembly.

“We had a multi-faceted and productive meeting. We discussed a number of important issues with the IMO Secretary-General, and we dedicated special attention to the issues of the Middle Corridor and regional connections, and Georgia’s key role in this regard. I emphasized that strengthening the Middle Corridor directly contributes to the sustainability and uninterrupted operation of the global supply chain, and we are ready for cooperation with the IMO in many areas, including safety and environmental issues on the Middle Corridor route, as well as digital harmonization” – Mariam Kvrivishvili stated.

Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Tamar Ioseliani also participated in the meeting. The Georgian side provided the IMO Secretary-General with detailed information about the progress of activities stipulated by the Maritime Reform Program in Georgia, including discussion on: the education and certification system for Georgian seafarers, ensuring maritime safety, improving port management, strengthening maritime education, digitalization of the maritime sector, etc.

“We discussed issues of maritime security and seafarers’ welfare, which is one of our main priorities. Accordingly, the technical support of the organization in this direction is extremely important for Georgia, as a maritime country. Furthermore, we highly value the technical assistance of the maritime organization, which significantly strengthens Georgia’s capabilities in meeting global environmental standards” – Mariam Kvrivishvili stated.

According to the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, the meeting also touched upon such an important issue as gender equality in the maritime sector. As Mariam Kvrivishvili noted, based on this, Georgia initiated the creation of WIMA Europe, which will be a regional platform for the visibility, leadership, and promotion of women working in the maritime industry.

Mariam Kvrivishvili also emphasized that the Maritime Single Window system has already been implemented in Georgia, which ensures full compliance with international conventions. Furthermore, attention was focused on the modernization of hydrographic capabilities in Georgia and the readiness to transition to the S-100 standard. Emphasis was placed on Georgia’s involvement in IMO’s green transition initiatives. It was noted that Georgia actively participates in IMO-supported environmental programs.

The IMO Secretary-General gave a positive assessment of the results achieved and the existing progress in Georgia’s maritime sector recently, and expressed future support for the country.

At the meeting with Arsenio Dominguez, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development officially invited the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization to the Georgia International Maritime Forum 2026.
