Within the framework of the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly in London, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili, held a meeting with the Vice Minister of Transport of the People’s Republic of China, Li Yang.
The parties discussed a wide range of issues regarding cooperation between the countries in the transport, including the maritime sector. Mariam Kvrivishvili, as well as Li Yang, emphasized that there is a strategic cooperation between Georgia and the People’s Republic of China which is developing dynamically. Focus was placed on the development of the Middle Corridor and Georgia’s important role in this process.
“Within the framework of the strategic partnership with China, trade and economic cooperation, especially in the areas of trade and transport, is deepening annually. Cargo turnover via the Middle Corridor is characterized by an increasingly growing dynamic - cargo turnover between China and Europe is increasing through our country. At the beginning of the current month, as a result of the visit of the Prime Minister of Georgia to China, a decision was made regarding direct flights between the capitals. The issue of launching direct flights between Tbilisi and Shanghai is also being considered. This will significantly contribute to deepening ties between the countries in the trade-economic, as well as people-to-people and tourism sectors. We also welcome the deepening of cooperation in the maritime sector and the sharing of China’s experience in this regard, especially in those directions that are in full compliance with our country’s priorities” – the Minister of Economy stated.
Mariam Kvrivishvili also emphasized that during the visit of the Georgian delegation to China, an agreement was also signed between the two countries, which envisages further deepening of the strategic cooperation. At this point, China is among Georgia’s largest trading partners, and investments from China showed a growing trend in the first half of 2025.
