The Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili, held a meeting with the Minister of Transport of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed Al Thani in London, within the framework of the UN International Maritime Organization Assembly. Deputy Minister of Economy, Tamar Ioseliani also participated in the meeting.
The parties discussed several important issues and special emphasis being placed on the strategic importance of the Middle Corridor, which connects Asia and Europe via the Black Sea.
“We discussed with the Minister of Transport of Qatar the role of the Middle Corridor as a key transport and logistics route between Asia and Europe in terms of connectivity and coordinated activities in the process of its development. Qatar is our important partner and we are ready to cooperate in the direction of transport connections, routes, and investments in the logistics sector” –Mariam Kvrivishvili commented.
The Ministers of the two countries also discussed the prospects of cooperation in the fields of Black Sea cargo flows, logistics and services.
Seafarer and general maritime safety, advancement of maritime education, search and rescue operations at sea, and hydrography – in the assessment of the parties, there are great prospects for cooperation between the countries in these directions, as well as readiness. As Mariam Kvrivishvili noted, the modernization of hydrographic services is also an important issue for Georgia and, accordingly, welcomes cooperation with the Qatar Hydrographic Center and Naval Forces.
“Georgia is interested in cooperation with Qatar in the transport and logistics sectors, as Qatar is one of the most successful countries in this regard. I am confident that cooperation in the maritime field will be fruitful for both countries, especially in terms of increasing Black Sea cargo flows, where the Middle Corridor will play a significant role” – Mariam Kvrivishvili noted.
