Inga Pkhaladze: By 2036, Georgia aims to become fully self-sufficient in terms of electricity and a reliable exporter of clean energy in the region and Europe

“Energy security remains a top priority for Georgia. As a reliable transit partner in the Black Sea and South Caucasus region, Georgia plays a constructive role in ensuring the stability and diversification of energy flows” – Inga Pkhaladze, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development stated in her speech at the Ayder International Energy Forum held in the city of Rize, Turkey. 

The Deputy Minister focused on energy infrastructure projects of regional importance, through which Georgia and the energy system of the South Caucasus will be connected to the EU electricity grid. Inga Pkhaladze introduced the forum participants to the progress of the Black Sea submarine cable and the development of the Green Energy Corridor. According to the Deputy Minister, these projects are not only infrastructure investments but reflect a shared commitment to energy diversification, decarbonization, and long-term regional sustainability.

Inga Pkhaladze also emphasized Georgia’s investment climate and the government’s long-term energy vision to devote more attention to the utilization of renewable energy sources in the country. “Our country possesses untapped potential in the directions of hydro, wind, and solar energy. We are ready to create a transparent and investor-oriented framework that will support sustainable projects in full compliance with environmental and social standards” – the Deputy Minister noted. 

“By 2036, Georgia aims to become fully self-sufficient in terms of electricity and a reliable exporter of clean energy in the region and Europe. We have an ambitious plan to increase the total installed capacity two and a half times, which involves the development of strategic HPPs for system flexibility and reliability, as well as large-scale wind and solar projects for further energy diversification” – Inga Pkhaladze stated. In her speech, the Deputy Minister also spoke about the ongoing energy sector reform in the country, the possibility of introducing new technologies in the sector, and other priority issues. 

At the Ayder Energy Forum, Inga Pkhaladze also held bilateral meetings with representatives of Turkish and Azerbaijani governmental and private energy companies.
