Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Tamar Ioseliani, along with the Director General of Georgian Railway JSC, Lasha Abashidze, met with the Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways, Rovshan Rustamov, to discuss cooperation between the two countries in the field of railway transportation.
As noted at the meeting, Georgia and Azerbaijan are successfully cooperating to increase the competitiveness of the Middle Corridor and attract additional cargo.
Special emphasis was placed on the official commissioning of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and the opportunities for increasing cargo turnover through it. It was noted that Georgian Railway will exclusively carry out freight transportation on the Marabda-Kartsakhi railway line.
The meeting highlighted that the agreement between the railways of Georgia and Azerbaijan is a significant fact for the country’s railway infrastructure and regional economic cooperation, as it will increase competitiveness and strengthen Georgia’s transit and logistical capabilities.
Following the meeting, the Director General of Georgian Railway JSC, Lasha Abashidze, along with the General Directors of BTKI Railways LLC, Levan Kankava and Mikael Abasov, signed an agreement which envisages that BTKI Railways will ensure the exclusive right of Georgian Railway to conduct transportation on this section.
