Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Inga Pkhaladze, participated in the discussion of the Georgia Climate and Development Report conducted by the World Bank Group. The report, among other key issues, addressed the utilization of renewable energy resources and overcoming energy challenges in Georgia.
The Deputy Minister declared that the Georgian government’s ambitious goal is for Georgia’s installed energy capacity to reach 11500 MW by 2036, which is 2,5 times higher than the current figure. According to Inga Pkhaladze, the government has reviewed overdue memoranda and construction permits related to energy generation projects and offered potential investors a choice: to continue work under updated deadlines and conditional penalty waivers, or to vacate project areas so that new investors can begin work. „Our goal is for energy resources to be distributed to active and reliable developers who are capable of realizing investments and developing additional energy capacities for the country“ – Inga Pkhaladze noted.
ongoing reform of Georgia’s electricity market and the maximum harmonization of the local legislative framework with European standards also were the highlighted part of the Deputy Minister’s speech.
Speaking on regional cooperation, Inga Pkhaladze emphasized the importance of regional connectivity focusing on strategic projects such as the Black Sea Submarine Cable and the Green Energy Corridor. According to Deputy Minister, these projects will diversify export opportunities and increase the overall resilience of the system.
„For us, regional integration is not only about trade but also includes security. A more interconnected system provides better flexibility, better balancing options and higher reliability. It transforms national markets into platforms for regional opportunities while simultaneously strengthening security of supply. Regional integration strengthens markets, paves the way for investments, and ensures the reliable supply of clean energy“ – the Deputy Minister noted.
