For the First Time in the History of National Independence, a Comprehensive Renewal of Georgian Railway Commences
05-05-2026

Georgian Railway is transitioning to a new stage of development, where efficiency, management quality, and results are prioritized. At the presentation of the company’s “Historic Renewal” project, which was attended by the Prime Minister, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development summarized the financial indicators of Georgian Railway and discussed ongoing and planned projects.

The presentation highlighted that a long-term development strategy has been formulated, based on three key pillars: infrastructure development, strengthening of freight transportation, and modernization of the passenger direction. Each direction is supported by detailed action plans and integrates infrastructural and operational development into a unified system, creating a foundation for the growth of the company’s efficiency, competitiveness and financial sustainability.

As the Minister stated, the cumulative effect of Georgian Railway’s optimization over the past year has exceeded 230 million GEL, while the company’s net profit has been increased by nearly 30%.

Regarding the operating profit margin, it grew from 25% to 36%. As a result of the implemented works, the capacity of the main railway line has increased by 30%, while the country’s transit time has been reduced by 20%.

“We are launching the historic renewal of Georgian Railway - a process that will fundamentally transform the company. We are initiating a complete renewal of the wagon and locomotive fleet. The acquisition of 50 new locomotives and 1500 wagons will be carried out, with more than 1 billion GEL in investment earmarked for this direction. This will enable us to reduce the country’s transit time from 24 hours to 12 hours and, simultaneously, double the country's transport capacity,” – Mariam Kvrivishvili noted.

As the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development said, the passenger direction is also actively developing alongside freight transportation. The company plans to purchase new passenger trains, which will allow Georgian Railway to double its passenger flow, making travel faster, more comfortable and compliant with modern standards.

By August 2026, the complete rehabilitation of the main Tbilisi-Batumi and Tbilisi-Akhaltsikhe railway lines will be completed, significantly improving both freight and passenger movement. Consequently, travel time towards Akhaltsikhe will be halved, and towards Batumi, it will be reduced to approximately 4 hours. In this context, the rehabilitation of the historic Borjomi-Bakuriani railway line is significant, with completion scheduled for the winter of 2027. As a result, Georgian citizens and tourists will once again have the opportunity to enjoy the unique experience of the Kukushka.

“The railway is part of a larger, integrated system, and this freight flow requires a strong maritime gateway. This is precisely why the Anaklia Deep Sea Port project is a logical continuation and a crowning element. The state is already constructing the marine infrastructure, and in the near future, the construction of the port's connecting road and an 18-kilometer railway line will commence,” – the Minister stated.

As noted during the meeting at the Paragraph Hotel, recent global events have highlighted the fragility of traditional routes and the need for new, reliable corridors, which has granted the Middle Corridor particular importance. It was emphasized that the increased interest in Georgia is a logical outcome, and the country is ready to take responsibility as a stable and quality-guaranteed partner. Through active international cooperation with Azerbaijan, Central Asian countries, and China, the Middle Corridor is already emerging as a realistic and competitive alternative for global trade.
