Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili, met with the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey, Alparslan Bayraktar, to discuss the priorities of cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector. The meeting was held within the framework of the International Natural Resources Summit (INRES) in Istanbul.

The parties positively assessed the close cooperation between the two countries in the fields of energy, trade, and investment. It was noted that the countries are strategic partners, which is successfully reflected in the processes of electricity import, export, and transit within the energy sector. It was stated that work in this direction will continue even more actively in both bilateral and regional formats.

Mariam Kvrivishvili emphasized Turkey’s role as a reliable partner in the energy sector and noted Georgia’s interest in exporting electricity to the Turkish market in the event of surplus generation in the country.

The Minister introduced her Turkish colleague to Georgia’s 10-year strategy for the development of the energy sector, according to which the country aims to become energy self-sufficient by 2036, with the total installed capacity reaching 11500 MW. This strategy also includes the development of energy infrastructure, including the construction and modernization of substations and transmission lines.

Special attention at the meeting was focused on the strategic importance of the Black Sea Submarine Electricity Cable project. It was noted that this large-scale initiative will further strengthen Georgia’s export potential, as well as the energy security and connectivity of the entire region.
