Al-Idrisi, Second Dredger Enters Anaklia Waterway - Dredging Operations Jointly Executed by Two Vessels from Belgian Company Jan De Nul Group’s Fleet, Al-Idrisi and Tristao Da Cunha

Dredging operations at Anaklia Port are actively underway having the second dredger, Al-Idrisi, entered the marine basin of the future port.

Seabed dredging along a 1-kilometre stretch at the base of the breakwater has already been completed, and dredging work has commenced on the harbour basin (the access and turning channels). These operations are being carried out jointly by the Belgian company Jan De Nul Group’s fleet dredgers - Al-Idrisi and Tristao Da Cunha.

Currently, construction of the first section of the initial breakwater core (rock and gravel placement) is in progress on the landward side, after which construction will move offshore. Upon completion of the dredging work, the seabed in the Anaklia harbour basin will be deepened to approximately 17,5 metres, and a 1376-metre-long breakwater will be constructed.

The depth of 17,5 metres will enable the port to accommodate the highest-capacity vessels navigating the Black Sea, while the 1376-metre breakwater will create a protected harbour basin, facilitating the development of deepwater container berths, as well as dry and liquid bulk cargo berths. The engineering design guarantees at least 95% annual operational availability for the port.

Construction work at the Anaklia Deep Sea Port is proceeding according to schedule. Heavy marine and construction equipment is operating continuously, whilst geodetic and environmental monitoring is being conducted using modern underwater systems and LiDAR drones.

The Anaklia Deep Sea Port is being developed under the Landlord Model when the state constructs and owns the primary port infrastructure, whilst private partners ensure terminal development and operation. This model fosters a competitive environment, encourages the involvement of international partners, attracts cargo flows and ensures the efficient functioning of the port.

In addition to port infrastructure, the state is providing the transport network leading to Anaklia, including the construction of a new highway and railway.

Zurab Sichinava, Director of Anaklia Port LLC, Ivane Abashidze, Director of the Maritime Transport Agency, and Eric Baits, Project Director for Anaklia from the Belgian company Jan De Nul, inspected the ongoing works at Anaklia Port.
