Upon the initiative of the European Commission, in 2022, Georgia will launch the construction sector energy efficiency projects, which will cover all civil engineering buildings.
In order to discuss the project details, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia hosted the European Union Delegation led by Katerina Maternova, the Deputy Director General of DG Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR). Deputy Ministers of Economy and Sustainable Development, representatives of the European Commission and the international financial institutions also attended the meeting.
Georgia has signed a protocol on joining the Energy Community and is committed to maintain the closer ties with the European directives on energy efficiency and now these directives set out certain standards for arranging the buildings in compliance with the energy efficiency standards.
The sides discussed the issues converging to the directives adoption process. As the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Irma Kavtaradze noted, this issue is not only essential for the country's economy, but for each and every citizen of Georgia as well.
"Energy efficiency measures will lead to less consumption of electricity and natural gas and we expect a reduction in utility bills as well. Energy consumption tends to be increasingly growing around the world; therefore, it is important to erect the buildings which are more energy efficient and help the industries and the transportation means to be adapted to to the standards of energy efficiency projects. The new buildings in Georgia will be energy efficient and we have to take measures towards making the existing buildings more energy efficient as well. This, on the one hand, will contribute to the energy and economic security and, on the other hand, will help to reduce costs for our citizens,“- Irma Kavtaradze stated.
Deputy Director General of the European Commission, Katerina Martinova noted that the relevant organizations will support Georgia in the project implementation, which will result in the economic growth and the number of investments in the country.
“We are trying to increase the energy efficiency rate in Georgia. Consequently, today's discussion with the government officials was conducted on this topic as well. They presented the energy efficiency action plan, which we discussed and received a great support from the Georgian side. We are eagerly ready to work with them and assist in the logistical and technical segments" – Katerina Martinova stated.
