Romeo Mikautadze Examined Reconstruction Works on Gardabani 500 Territory
27-03-2023

First Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Romeo Mikautadze, familiarized himself with the results of the reconstruction works carried out on the territory of the Gardabani-500 substation. Gardabani-500 is a key substation for the energy supply of the country. During the winter period, when the generation of hydroelectric power plants in Georgia decreases, the substation provides 60-70% of electricity consumption in the energy system of Georgia at the expense of heating plants and transit power lines.

Giorgi Gigineishvili, General Director of JSC State Electricity System of Georgia and Bachana Suladze, General Director of Sakrusenergo JSC, accompanied the Deputy Minister and inspected the works carried out in the substation.

First Deputy Minister stated that the implementation of large-scale works in the substation contributed to the increase of the capacity of the substation. “After the completion of the project, between the energy systems of Georgia and Azerbaijan, it will be possible to exchange 1000 MW of power smoothly, both in the direction of export-import as well as transit,” – Romeo Mikautadze noted. According to Deputy Minister, the implementation of the project with the budget of about 20 million GEL, will help to increase the reliability of synchronous operation with Azerbaijan. Moreover, First Deputy Minister highlighted that the completion of the project will significantly increase the country’s stable electricity supply, which is particularly important during the winter season.

It should be noted that by the end of 2022, the complete reconstruction of the substation Gardabani-500 was carried out – new cells of 330m2 and 220 m2, and the second autotransformer with a capacity of 400 MVA and of 330KW became operational. Works has been implemented in accordance with a ten-year plan for the development of the transmission network of Georgia. The power transmission line connects the energy systems of Georgia and Azerbaijan through substations Gardabani-500 and the Aghstafa.
