Mariam Kvrivishvili Discusses Possibilities of Restoring Rail Passenger Traffic Between Tbilisi and Baku with Head of “Azerbaijan Railways” After Visit to Azerbaijan

Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili met with Rovshan Rustamov, the head of Azerbaijan Railways, who is on a working visit to Tbilisi. At the end of last week, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia was on an official visit to Baku, where she discussed with top Azerbaijani officials the possibilities of restoring passenger rail traffic between the countries. Due to the importance of the issue, the head of Azerbaijan Railways visited Tbilisi in the shortest possible time to further discuss the matter. At the meeting with the Minister of Economy, all technical issues raised by the Georgian side during Mariam Kvrivishvili’s official visit to Baku a few days ago, related to the initiative to restore rail passenger traffic between Georgia and Azerbaijan, were discussed.

Deputy Minister Guram Guramishvili, General Director of JSC Georgian Railways Lasha Abashidzes, and Head of LLC Marabda-Kartsakhi Railway, Levan Kankava, also attended the meeting at the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development. The parties emphasized the importance of rail passenger traffic between Georgia and Azerbaijan, which will give a new impetus to strengthening economic relations between the two countries, including in the field of tourism.

Mariam Kvrivishvili expressed special gratitude to the Government of Azerbaijan and the representatives of the railway for their prompt and effective steps and expressed hope that the dialogue on the possibilities of rail passenger traffic between Georgia and Azerbaijan will conclude with a tangible decision in the near future.
