16-09-2025

Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili, along with the Prime Minister of Georgia, inspected the construction of a new runway and ongoing reconstruction work at Kutaisi International Airport.

Work on the runway is being carried out over an area of 3500 meters. Currently, the foundation is being laid, inert materials are being brought in, asphalt is being paved, and artificial surface work is being done. The earth excavation process is nearing completion, and work is underway to prepare the taxiway’s foundation and the cement-concrete surface on the aircraft parking apron. The total value of the project is up to 240 million GEL.

After the completion of the runway and related airfield infrastructure, Kutaisi International Airport will be the first airfield in Georgia with an “F” code designation, which will allow it to receive large (Category F) aircraft without restrictions.

“Historic project is underway at Kutaisi International Airport. For the first time in our country, a completely new runway and related airfield infrastructure are being built. After its completion, Kutaisi Airport will be able to serve large aircraft. This means flights from longer distances, as well as cargo services, which will significantly increase the airport’s role in the country’s economy and contribute to revenue growth” Mariam Kvrivishvili said.

As the Minister noted, Kutaisi Airport is characterized by rapidly growing dynamics, driven by the entry of new airlines and an increase in direct flights and frequencies. According to her, in the first 8 months of 2025, Kutaisi International Airport served 1 238 458 passengers, which is 11% higher than the figure for the same period of last year. “This year, we plan to revise the existing airport development plan to increase the passenger terminal’s capacity to 5 million passengers” – Mariam Kvrivishvili stated.

The construction of the new 3,5 km runway and airfield infrastructure is part of the first phase of Kutaisi International Airport’s general development plan.
