Giorgi Cherkezishvili Participated in EU Eastern Partnership Transport Ministerial

On April 27, 2018, Giorgi Cherkezishvili, the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, participated in the EU Eastern Partnership Transport Ministerial in Ljubljana (Slovenia). The Eastern Partnership member states adopted the Eastern Partnership Declaration on Road Safety at the Ministerial. The Declaration envisages number of strategic announcements and measures targeted at the improvement and development of the road safety management, goals and indicators to be achieved, safe road infrastructure and safe vehicles, road behavior, cooperation and information exchange between the Eastern Partnership countries.

In his speech at the Ministerial, Giorgi Cherkezishvili noted that Georgia fully shares the EU’s so called zero concept, which aims to reduce traffic accidents and transport emissions to zero. Giorgi Cherkezishvili emphasized that by adopting the declaration, Georgia reaffirms its commitment to get closer to European standards and introduce the best practices in the country in order to ensure safe motor transportation.

The Ministerial also discussed the role of the Eastern Partnership in terms of provision of the transport and trade links between Europe and Asia. In addition, the Commission presented the Transport Investment Plan of the Eastern Partnership countries, which was developed by the World Bank and is intended to be adopted by the European Commission this October. Georgia’s priority transportation-logistic projects are included in the plan as well.
