“Extensive infrastructural projects are actively underway at Kutaisi International Airport. We are constructing a new runway of 3,5 km long, on a 70 hectares. Simultaneously, we are adding four taxiways and increasing the number of existing aprons up to 17. This is a large-scale investment project, the funding for which was allocated by the Government of Georgia” – Mariam Kvrivishvili, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development stated when speaking to journalists in Kutaisi after reviewing the construction work on the airport’s runway.

As the Deputy Minister noted, the project’s implementation will increase the capacity of Kutaisi International Airport. She added that a revision of the existing airport development plan is also scheduled for this year to increase the passenger terminal’s capacity to 5 million passengers.

“Kutaisi International Airport is experiencing rapid growth, driven by the arrival of new airlines and the launch of new direct flights. Over 30 direct flights operate from Kutaisi, 24 of which are to European destinations. The Georgian government continues to develop the airport’s infrastructure. I am confident that both the runway and terminal expansion projects will significantly contribute to economic development,” – the Deputy Minister noted.

The construction of Kutaisi David the Builder International Airport’s new, 3,5 km runway and its associated aerodrome infrastructure is in an active phase. Clearance work on the territory has been completed, and earth excavation is currently underway. The runway construction is spread across a 30 000 square meter area, where foundation work and the delivery of inert materials are currently in progress.

Simultaneously, construction work for the aircraft apron is underway on 35,000 square meters, with a total area of 55 000 square meters. Additionally, new engineering and irrigation facilities are being installed over an approximate total area of 17 km. The project is being carried out by the construction company Anagi. Upon completion, Kutaisi International Airport will have Georgia’s first F-code designated aerodrome, capable of receiving large (Category F) aircraft without restrictions.

The construction of the new, 3,5 km runway and aerodrome infrastructure is part of the first phase of Kutaisi International Airport’s general development plan. This plan was finalized with the involvement of the United Airports of Georgia and IATA Consulting, one of the world’s most authoritative aviation consulting companies.
