European Parliament And European Council Granted Status Of Project Of Mutual Interest (PMI) To The Black Sea Submarine Cable Project

The European Parliament and the European Council granted the status of Project of Mutual Interest (PMI) to the Black Sea submarine cable project. Following the granting of PMI status, the Black Sea submarine cable project falls under EU energy legislation, which means that the project will benefit from simplified procedures for obtaining research and construction permits. At the same time, obtaining the status of a project of mutual interest is extremely important in terms of establishing a business and investment model. According to European legislation, approved projects of mutual interest will have active legal, financial and administrative support from the European Union. 

The Black Sea Submarine Cable Project envisages the arrangement of an underwater digital and high-voltage transmission network, which should connect the electricity systems of Georgia and Europe with each other. Within the framework of the project, an underwater cable with a length of approximately 1155 km (1115 km submarine and 40 km land cable) and a capacity of 1300 MW will be built. 

The implementation of the project will contribute to the strengthening of energy security of Europe and the South Caucasus region, the development of the renewable energy sector and will increase transit opportunities between the indicated regions. 

The conducted technical-economic study confirmed that the project is technically and economically feasible. At this stage, preparatory works for the procurement of Black Sea seabed research services are underway. 

The Black Sea submarine cable project is included in the ten-year development plan (TYNDP) for 2026-2036 of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E).
